Famous Temples in Goa

Shri Mangeshi Temple

Lord Manguesh was an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is regarded as the family god or kuldevta of many Brahmans, Gouds, and Saraswats. The temple complex has a simple yet exquisite structure. Shri Mangeshi temple features elegant-looking domes, pillars, a Nandi bull, and a magnificent water tank.

This temple possesses a spacious hall and it organizes many annual events and celebrations on the occasions of Ramnavmi,  Anant Vritotsava, Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali. It is one of the prominent Hindu temples of Goa and it also has many legends attached to it.

Shanta Durga Temple

The temple is a divine abode of Goddess Shanta Durga. She was considered an incarnation of the Goddess Parvati. This temple features a unique blend of Indo-Portuguese architectural styles. Shanta Durga temple is located on the foothills of a mountain chain and is surrounded by lush green vegetation. The temple possesses Roman-arched windows and its golden palanquin is one of the main attractions that is shown on festive days.

Sri Nagueshi Temple

Situated in the Ponda district of Goa and is dedicated to Lord Nagesh, who is regarded as a form of lord Shiva and is believed to be more than 600 years old. The temple possesses a water reservoir surrounded by palm trees. The main attraction of this water reservoir is that one can view the reflection of the deity in the inner sanctum.

The Festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated here with great enthusiasm as devotees gather to offer prayers and many programs and celebrations are held during the festival. However, this is not a major festival of the temple, Anguish Satrap celebrated during the month of November is the main festival.

Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla

Mahadev temple of Goa is made in Jain and Kandama style architecture and is believed to be one of the oldest shrines in the entire region. The temple is located in the midst of the mountains of the Deccan plateau. The entire temple is decorated with beautiful carvings with the figures of Hindu gods Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu.

The temple faces the east direction and hence the sun’s rays shine on the deity. This temple features a headless Nandi bull in a mandap whose top is dismantled. This temple is quite small from other Goan temples but it possesses great importance among the local Goan people. Moreover, it is situated nearby the river Ragado.
